Transition from Tax to Audit

    Hello fellow another71,

I’m faced with a major dilemma. I just got two offers from two mid-sized firms. One being an audit internship and another being a full time tax position. I need help because I want to think long term and believe that audit has better exit opportunities/more diverse skills. For tax, I’m not sure I want to work in tax my ENTIRE life because I’m pigeon-holed and whatnot. Yes, I know it’s in demand and the skills are more specialized.

The struggle is that the internship doesn’t guarantee a full time offer, they’ll automatically consider me for it but it’s not set in stone.

So my question is that, is it possible to move from tax to audit? Has it been done? I didn’t ask about it at the firm because I didn’t want to decrease my chances of getting an offer. PLEASE HELP ME!

Do you, personally, have a preference for tax over audit? That's what I would go with.

    Think about:

    1. The hours requirements differences

    2. What do you want long-term? To be partner, to run your own business, to work part-time for specific clients, to work as a CFO/controller?

    3. I would specifically ask the audit internship if they can give you a list of requirements to meet to get a full-time position once the internship is completed. Also, ask if they have the work to actually support you full-time year round. Sometimes, a smaller business needs an intern for a specific time of year but doesn't have the revenue to actually support you year-round.

    4. The length of the projects. I thought I would LOVE audit, but I start to hate it bc of how long each client takes. Tax is nice because it's more of a “wham, bam. thank-you, ma'am” type of situation.

    5. In general, what interests you more. Memorizing laws/entering information, or verifying information and filling out check-lists. (that is a super-simplification, but pretty much the difference)
