weird interview in two hours– thoughts?

So I’m interviewing with a big 4 in two hours through on campus recruiting. The local branch of this big 4 is a smallish office and the only one of the big 4s we have in town (we have a number of medium and larger firms, though, oddly). I met the recruiter at the on campus meet the firms event, and she told me to come in for the interview even though they have nothing available in the tax department until THE SUMMER OF 2014(!!). Seriously. I am going to go and be professional and do my best, but how bizarre is this? I’m trying to think of it as a networking opportunity, but I’m having a hard time not feeling like I’m wasting both our time. Thoughts?

    That's just rediculous.

There might be some reason though that you aren't aware–perhaps a better job or a different position they would like to consider you for.

Go, if nothing else use them for interview practice.

Do you have the opportunity for an immediate job in another area like Audit?

I once interviewed at my College for a position with a regional firm that thought a lot of itself…..Evans Porter Bryant and Co.

I asked how many positions they were hiring for (only 1 position, literally 1 person). I asked how many schools they were going to interview at and it was literally like 13 colleges for one position. Yeah, no thanks. If you take yourself that seriously, I don't want to work for you.

    Keep that in mind.

I had similar situations where they were only hiring 1 person for intern positions over mutiple schools… and not to brag or anything, but I was always selected. Go big or go home.

Well, I went, and I ended up interviewing with the managing partner. It was a great interview despite the fact that they have no job to offer me. We had a wonderful conversation that really reaffirmed my desire to work in public accounting, and I'm glad I went, no matter what comes of it.

Don't consider that a waste…… you might just be surprised what comes of it.

Maybe that managing partner has a golfing buddy at another firm who needs a good person. Maybe someone will quit or get pregnant….you just never ever know.

    Good luck!

Yeah. lol. He might fire someone and replace them with you!

My guess is that they wouldn't have interviewed you if they didn't think that they may have a position opening up. Waste of everyone's time – including the managing partner's.

I would keep an eye on the firm's job listings for your city. Perhaps a full time or internship opportunity will be opening shortly.
