What can I expect after verbal offer?

I got a verbal offer from PwC but I’m not sure when I am going to receive my official offer letter. I’ve emailed the recruiter and haven’t received a response yet but it’s only been 2-3 business days since I’ve received my verbal offer. Can anyone tell me what kind of information I would need to provide once I receive my offer letter? I know they ask for references but I’m skeptical to give my manager/supervisor’s contact info since they do not know I’ve been applying to new jobs. I was going to notify them once everything has been finalized. Do they require a manager’s contact info? Also, they have decided on a start date for me but I’m not sure if they are expecting me to give my two weeks notice before I’ve passed the background check. I did not lie about anything and I do not have any criminal records so I’m sure I will be fine but I don’t know if it makes sense to notify my current employers before I pass the background check for sure. How long does the background check process normally take? I have about five weeks until my start date but I do want to make sure I give my employers a two weeks notice after everything has been finalized. I feel like I am worrying too much but I really don’t want to mess anything up. Please help!

Background checks vary from 2 days to 2 weeks, depending on how in-depth they are. I've even seen us get them back in 1 day before. If I was in your spot, I wouldn't feel the need to wait to resign till the background check came back (I've only been notified that it had come back for 1 job I took – the others just presumed I'd show up on the start date unless I heard otherwise); however, I would want the official offer letter. At my current job, I think my new boss presumed I would resign etc. off the verbal offer (which actually was finalized and accepted via email, but still not the “formal” offer). Due to some schedule conflicts to come in for the actual letter, my 4+ weeks that I had from the time of the verbal offer till the start date ended up being just over 2 weeks notice for my prior employer. But, I'd still rather wait for the formal offer letter.

Assuming pwc does it the same as other big 4 firms…

Once you get a verbal offer, you will receive a follow up written offer via mail (maybe email now?) in about 5-10 days. For that written offer, you have to formally “accept” it with a call/email AFTER you get the offer, and then sign and mail it back (maybe email now?) to them.

After that, it takes another week or so before you start getting requests for background checks, starting info, in some cases client/industry preference list, etc. They'll ask you to update your formal application (online in their system) in order to process your background check. Once you acknowledge the check and re-submit your information, the background check shouldn't take more than a week (less if they can quickly and easily verify your information), but that also depends on how quickly the third party background verification provider takes. So, it could be longer. After all that goes through… you'll start to get more info on starting, client stuff, other onboarding stuff.

    congrats!

The weird thing is they never asked for my transcript. My gpa was the first thing the recruiter asked me so I told her the truth. My overall gpa isn't too bad but I've got some embarrassing grades for some of my intermediate accounting classes. I still received 3.7-3.8 in my audit related classes which is the field I'm going for. I'm expecting them to ask me to submit a transcript once they send me the written offer. Could they rescind the offer because I received not so good grades in some of my accounting classes? I'm wondering if the background check company just uses this information to verify that the gpa I stated on my application is correct. I've been out of school for a while now, worked in the same firm for over 3 years, and passed the cpa exam. Not sure if gpa is still totally relevant but the recruiter did seem to emphasize it when she was talking to me.

Could they rescind it? Yes. They can rescind the offer because the partner broke a nail and is cranky with no other reason whatsoever. Unless the offer is a contract for employment, they can rescind at any time for any reason. However, if your GPA is what you said it is, then I don't see any reason that they would rescind it for lower intermediate accounting courses. Often Intermediate is the first “real” accounting courses, so lower scores there wouldn't concern me as an employer as much as lower scores in, for example, the audit courses.
