So you’re most likely in public accounting, working on your CPA, and you finally get it.

Did you stay in public accounting? Did you head to private? Does it really = more money like Peter Olinto always says? Just curious

    AUD - July 2014 - 76
    REG - August 2014 - 82
    FAR - November 2014 - 78
    BEC - January 2015 - 81

    DONE!!!!

Used Becker online. Who needs a text when you can burn your eyes out staring at the screen for months on end?

"Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place and it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't how hard you're hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!"

Seems to me that experience is more valuable than the slightly overrated certificate. It's the combination of the two that are dangerous.

    CPA - Since 2015
    CISA - Smashed 2012
    CIA - Passed 2015

Am I the only one who thought “Got Drunk”? LOL

I don't think the certificate is slightly overrated. If anything, CPA's don't always get the credit we deserve.

It's not so much that things change when you pass – maybe a few years ago that was true (I really don't know). A partner said this to me once: “Having it won't make you – but not having it will kill you.” In other words, view it more as one of many steps on the road to success (albeit, a very important step) rather than a final goal.

Personally – I passed relatively quickly (1 year after I started working) – stayed in public for a little more than a year after that, then left. It just wasn't rewarding at all. If you're constantly on awesome corporate clients – maybe that's a blast – but I was about 30% interesting corporate clients, 40% crappy small corps, and 30% miscellaneous non-profits. So I figured – why not go to work at one of the exciting corporate clients, and be interested in my work every single day?

    - 2.5 years experience in Public Accounting (Audit)
    - 2.0 years experience in corporate accounting
    - All 4 CPA Exam sections passed first time
    - Currently CPA & Controller at a small manufacturing company

Yea, I'm over public accounting. I have one more season left in me.

I just wish I was doing something more exciting. I chose the safe route to accounting, which I'm sure will be fine, and we'll all make decent money as long as we try and push ourselves. But it would be nice to actually enjoy the work you do, rather than constantly counting the minutes to the weekend.

I like the quote “it wont make you, but not having it will kill you”. They should add to the end, “if the process of getting it hasn't killed you first”

@Kricket No you weren't the only one. I drank peach wine(lots of peach wine) out of a quart size mason jar. In other words, I had a snootful.

I just finished the exam in Wisconsin and need to finish the application and ethics exam. I'm currently working in private company doing our accounting. Prior to that I did finance for a large worldwide corp. My question is, how will I be looked at if I apply for positions in public? Would that be my best route? I “think” I want to get a year or two of public tax as experience but don't want to take a step back. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

Also, if anyone has any insight on finishing up the Wisconsin app and ethics please advise!

    Thanks!

Though I dont' have any input on the public question….I am also in WI and I just finished up the ethics exam this afternoon. To be 100% truthful….I slacked at work today and did the whole ethics exam in a couple of hours. A lot of it is common sense. It's open-everything, so as long as you have the pages open for the WI statutes and codes it's not too bad.

As for the application, I would just say to READ and RE-READ all the instructions before you send anything in. You'd hate to miss a signature, or a checkbox or something silly like that and have your license delayed.

Congrats on passing the exam!! Doesn't it feel awesome?!?!
