LOL @ UNC Macc. As if UNC is a good school for those degrees. You do not need degrees from good schools to get into big 4. Thats proven by anyone who gets into big 4 for UNC. LOL.

I think you may be compensating for something else with all those degrees and certs

I agree with UNC Macc, it seems that they only want to hire interns through their schools to meet their Quotas. I keep getting rejected even with CPA sections passed and over two years as a financial analyst. 3.33 overall and 3.47 acc GPA from a good school. Even signed up to spend one day at Baker Tilly, they didn't allow that lol.

@Peanut Butter – I've interviewed all sorts for entry level…not yet graduated, graduated within the past 2 years, graduated undergrad 20 years ago but making a career change. If you've already graduated, it will be harder, but not impossible. Employers know the job market is tough these days, but there definitely is some of the cynicism fuzy mentioned. My preference would be to hire someone who is still in school; not someone who has already graduated. This is why it's especially important to network like crazy if you've already graduated. People are much more likely to interview you/hire you if they've met you before…or they will recommend you for other positions. We just hired someone who likely would not have gotten the job (he was very shy) except for the fact that he was recommended by someone I know.

    Jilly Bean,

Can I, with my MS complete, go back to school and take either a non-matriculated class or a class for another degree (MBA?) just to become a “student” again? Is this something that is see-through to a recruiter? I'm looking a loophole. Luck has never been on my side. I have to be smart. Delay graduation?, even though I will have 150 credits and a degree this semester? What's my best bet. I want to work for a public accounting firm. That's my goal. I refuse to quit.

I already told you what your best bet was. Here is your loophole: Graduate, get a job in internal auditing at a company, pass the CPA, and after two years work experience auditing, apply for public accounting gigs. You're fighting a near impossible battle trying to get in this way.

UNC, I can get an internal audit corporate job even being out of school for a while? Are these available through staffing firms, or are these mostly campus recruits as well?

And you think delaying graduation another year is a bad idea?

@Peanut Butter, sorry for the delayed response…

I did help in interviewing/recruiting but I have since gone to private accounting. If anyone expects anything more than what I previously mentioned, they're setting up the new hire for failure

    DONE!!!!

Used Becker online. Who needs a text when you can burn your eyes out staring at the screen for months on end?

"Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place and it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't how hard you're hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!"

Delaying graduation is a bad idea. Doubling down on an MBA is a bad idea.

Having some perseverance is a good idea.

There are plenty of smaller firms that do their hiring AFTER graduation. Additionally, the many firms that do their hiring a year in advance have changing needs that may need to be met (e.g. unanticipated new client and now needs more bodies).

As far as entry level requirements go, we wawnt:

    1) Professional enthusiasm

    2) Leadership, grades, etc.

    3) Hygiene, disposition, etc.

    4) We want to like a new recruit. If I can't see myself being crammed into a hot, shitty audit room for 16 straight hours with a person, they ain't getting my vote.

Bill, thanks for your sense of humor.

I've been rejected by so many firms, you wouldn't believe me.

Does anyone know whether HR Rejection letters are all the same, or if they are tailored just a little? Like a different one for “candidate we didn't like” to “candidate we did like but there wasn't enough space”? Just curious.

I'd believe you. I interviewed with 10, yes TEN firms before I found my job out of school. The crazy thing is that I was interviewing with 90% of the firms I applied to. That includes online applications. I felt as if I were always the bridesmaid, never the bride, so to speak (despite being a bearded 6'4″ 250 lb male, I can't think of a better phrase).

If you're getting a lot of rejections, you have to replay the interviews in your head and think about where they went wrong. This requires a little self-awareness (something which I've never been particularly good at). After you figure that out, you'll be able to interview more successfully.

Remember to SELL YOURSELF. A good interview should be like one long humble-brag where the interviewer doesn't think you're a jerk after its over.

    #634589

Bill, I think I just hit 11. It might even be 12. I'm losing count.

Yes. I am the bridesmaid as well. I'm actually only 6'0, but I'm clean shaven, athletic, smile alot… no major problems with physical appearance. Good grades, my friends are very loyal, good work history. It's bonkers.

I'm literally cold calling a bunch of random small CPA firms I found online. How's that for being lost at sea.

Guys, even though this is an anonymous forum, if any of you have hiring capabilities are looking for someone, I urge you to consider contacting me. I'm the best bet there is. Why no one wants to bet on me yet is a mystery. I'm like Kurt Warner not getting drafted (for all you NFL geeks like me).

Well, if it makes you feel any better, the first job is the hardest one to find. After a few years in you'll have recruiters calling you at your desk.

    #634591

That makes me feel slightly better. Like an aspirin vs. actually fighting off a cold better. Your humor is good humor.
