I got a 68 on REG. I am always so close on these exams, but I can’t seem to get the 75. I mean, I passed FAR but that was because Cindy at Yaeger is the GREATEST teacher on the planet. For AUD, I’ve received a 73 and a 70. And for REG, I just got a 68. The worst part is….I study super hard. I could explain any topic in the book. But when I get to the exam, I see questions and I’m like “what the crap!?”. I don’t know if I’m studying wrong or what. I really really need some help. There has to be something I’m missing. Something that everyone but me knows about.

I use Yaeger. I follow the videos and mark in the book as they talk about things. Then I go back and read each of those items in the notes or book. I memorize what I’m supposed to memorize. I read Ninja Notes every day. And for REG and AUD I do ALL of the questions in the Wiley book. I also work on MCQ’s from the Wiley Test Bank every day.

have you tried working the sims in the wiley tb? i would always score high on mcq and thought i knew the material until i tried to do sims and was lost

Hey Future it seems like you might be flailing….moving from one bad exam to trying another.

My advice would be to stick with the one you just studied until you pass it, then move on.

As for the rest of the advice, just keep going. My two exams were completely different and I swear it does depend on the respective people with whom you take the exam.

Keep it up, don't be discouraged!

I'd definitely add Wiley to your MCQ's and SIMS.

Could you possibly be affected by seeing a couple of questions you don't understand and then lose concentration on the exam? I remember the director of my review program says you can't dwell on questions you don't understand because it will effect your performance on the exam. You just have to brush off the question, maybe flag it, and if you are clueless guess B.

I am sorry, you did not pass your exam…

Now, from my experience and my fails I can say this; I didn't study like I should have to get a passing score. Yes I sat in front of the book and thought everything would transfer through osmosis by reading and memorizing… OK so that didn't work. So maybe studying hard is not the way to go… you have to study and I mean really study: read the concept, understand it and apply it. Study, review, repeat… Read the book thrice. Do your mcs and sims. Not just memorize them to get them off the way… Understand the concept… You will be surprised what a major difference this little change in your study plan will do.

I also used Yaeger. I failed every single exam on my first go around. So I had 0 exams passed after taking 4 exams.

Then I said screw it, I will just study my own way. And my strategy was to do every single MCQ in the Wiley Textbook starting from the beginning to the end. With each MCQ, I made sure I knew why the correct answer was correct and why the wrong answers were wrong. I always read the solution at the back of the chapter and if I felt unsure about something, I would read the topic in the book. Then when I was finished with every single MCQ in the book, I went back to the beginning and started over again.

With each section, it took me about 2 weeks to do EVERY SINGLE mcq in the book the first time, and then I did ALL of the MCQ's a second time and a third time in my 3rd week and a fourth and fifth time on my 4th week. Then in my last week before the exam, I would do one last run through of all the MCQs, and then I would go over the chapters I wasn't sure about and wrote out all of the formulas or rules I needed to memorize. I never did a single practice SIM. When I wasn't studying I skimmed a little bit through NINJA but the bulk of my studying was Wiley. I've employed this strategy with each section and now I have passed each test (FAR 84, BEC 86, REG 85). I have one left. So in my first attempt I was 0/4 and now I am on my second attempt and I have passed 3/3 test with AUD remaining. I also worked full-time during all of this and I didn't even study every day. Most of my studying was on weekends and I did maybe 3 or 4 chapters worth of MCQs during the weekdays.

Throw all your books out, get Roger, Wiley And Ninja notes and audio. Do all three times and dont stop until you do 3000 mcqs. Approximately 200 hours per part even for BEC.

@OP Long answer short, yes you are studying wrong if you keep getting close and not passing. Ppl on here don't really like to tell it like it is.

I too got a 68 my first show down with REG. However I barely knew individual taxation, differentiating between corporate and individual taxation or S corp and C corp.

I retook it a month later and gained 15 points. My suggestion to you is to do as much mcq's as you can. Literally do mcq's until you puke. When that is done, look at the more comprehensive problems and imagine a simulation from that.

For REG you need to spend 80% of your time on chapters 1-4 and 20% on chapters 5-7.

@jokami and @runhomejack……you are both correct. I have come to the realization that memorization is a huge part of this exam. I just have to buckle down and memorize stuff. Also, I need to slow down on my MCQ's and really understand them. Sometimes, it's hard. I mean, if you know what the question is asking…..you know what the question is asking. Does that make sense?

Maybe you're an auditory learner? I got a 10 point rise between BEC and REG, and the only difference in studying was the NINJA audio.

Let me tell you something, I used Yaeger for FAR and I passed, and that's because as you said Cindy is the best teacher ever, but when I had Yaeger for REG I studied for a month then I found Yaeger is not very good in Reg, I was honest with myself and I switched to Becker and I passed, it costed a lot, but CPA worth anything you give

I am telling you switch the the review you have, but see if Yaeger is really working for you or not!!
