So, my boyfriend got his results back, and he got a 45 on FAR

He supposedly studied for 3 months. I’ve never, ever heard of a score that low, from someone who studied.

I worked my butt off and passed my exams 2 years ago. He was supposed to work on his then too, and put it off.

I’ve been super supportive about him “finally getting the motivation to study” and now he gets a 45

I’m so confused. Has anyone who actually studied for 3 months failed that bad? Or should I assume that he really didn’t study and let another 3 months of our lives slip away?

I’m super frustrated. I know how hard the exams are. Studying was a real low point in my life. But a 45???

Edit: I know I sound harsh. I’m just honestly confused about how he got a 45. I put no pressure on him. Gave him time, made no plans to do anything. I’m just shocked. Even a 60 or 70 would have made more sense than a 45.

And a couple of years back, he did lie about studying for the exam, when he wasn’t. so I’m honestly just tying to figure out if that’s happened again.

I don’t care if he becomes a CPA too. Wasn’t my idea for him to pursue this again, but I was 100% supportive.

If you're questioning whether or not he actually studied when he told you he was studying, your relationship has bigger problems than the CPA exam.To be honest it sounds like you're looking for an out and if that's the case this is as good as any.

(ps there is no % on the exam).

This is one of very few times I have to agree with MLA. Are you seriously planning on leaving your boyfriend cause he is not doing well with his studies? I know we live in a Capitalist country, but this is getting out of hand. Now love is measured by IQ, I think he will benefit if you end up leaving him.

Maybe the CPA isn't something he really wants. And that's OK too.
If it's not alright that he's not a CPA then maybe it is time to move on. The point of the relationship is to be a team, not to bail when the going gets tough. If that were the case my husband would have bailed 5 years ago, we wouldn't be married or have two beautiful children.

Failed FAR miserably and need serious advice

It happens. And from my own experience, if my my boyfriend put as much pressure on me as it sounds like you are on your boyfriend, I would've completely cracked. I studied really hard for REG for 2 months and got a 66. Taxes are just NOT my thing. He told me “It's ok, we can try for as long as you want and if you don't get it, life goes on.” He has made this process so much easier on me than it would've been having to go through it on my own. The exams are a breeze for some (few) people, and they're really freaking difficult for others. If he really doesn't want to do the CPA, he needs to come clean and just tell you so you can both move on from this. But if it's just taking him a little while to get started (like in my case) he needs all the support he can get.

You of all people should understand how hard it is having done it yourself. And yes, it sounds like you guys have bigger issues than him not passing the exams.

Ditch him. Obviously all the cool guys are getting 76's on all 4 exams.

… In all seriousness, a 45 score indicates one of 2 things:
    1) Lack of intelligence, assuming a true effort was made to study and pass the exams and a proper study method was used that's compatible with his learning needs.
    2) Improper study methods for his learning style and/or insufficient preparation.

I'll let you judge #1, and am willing to bet it's some high chance of #2.

You know, one super secret way of finding the answer –> Talk to him.

Ask to see his software stats to see if you can identify any weaknesses…it may show # of questions….time spent…etc like on NINJA MCQ.

If he got a 45 on FAR, sounds like he'd be the perfect candidate for law school.

Looks like there's something deeper & dishonest there, though. Cut the cord.

“So, my boyfriend got his results back” – Something you don't hear everyday. I prematurely scheduled BEC, figured since I paid for it might as well take it. Got a Big O 43. So a score that low is possible, mind you I didn't study at ALL, didn't do the written section at all, and it had been 2+years since I took cost accounting. So such a score is possible. But if he really studied for 3 months, highly unlikely. Just be supportive, and based on posts I've seen here the CPA exam is not only a test of knowledge but also endurance (some people have taken each section 3+times)

And all snark aside, I got a 47 on aud after studying pretty intensely. Had it out with my boss that morning, was exhausted, had a toothache, went to Prometric and really had a lousy attitude that day, basically went through the exam and didn't even half read the problems and finished in about an hour. Totally my fault mind you, should have gotten it together and saved myself a retake and the fee but it is what it is. Not saying I would have passed that day but my feeling at that point was a 74 is the same as a 47 (which it really is) so why bother.

I still think your OP reads like this is the straw that broke the camel's back. Like you two are on completely different pages in life and this just made it clearer to you.

I totally agree with mla on this one!

Studying hasn't harmed or hurt my relationship at all (and I've yet to actually pass a section yet… 2 failed attempts at REG), but we've also been together for 5 years and live together. In fact my boyfriend (who is in sales, not an accounting guy at all), takes me out to dinner to celebrate every time I take a test and every time I've gotten back a score.. because in his words “it shouldn't be about a pass or a fail, because getting the CPA is a process and you should be proud of yourself for starting the process”

Have you considered that maybe he has bad test anxiety or something, and that's the reason that he put it off in the first place? I can imagine that'd be hard to admit to someone who passed them all already. I think it's important to remember that these tests don't come easily for all.. especially when you're a few years removed from college and the test taking environment.

Lastly… the CPA is a real expensive process to take on, so I understand being slightly annoyed if he paid all that (with y'alls joint finances) and lied about actually studying, but you probably have a lot more issues in your relationship (no offense..) if you're considering ending it because he failed, or if he's even lying about studying in the first place…

I'm confused as to this thread.

Is the OP planning to break up with the guy because of the low score?

Does the OP thinks that the boyfriend is not taking the exam seriously because of the fact he lied the first time and it is dejavue all over again?

Should i tune in next time?

Relationship advice aside, I feel like there is no way you can truly, whole-heartedly devote yourself to studying for 3 months and still only get a 45. I'd even go as far as to say, I think 3 months is way to much to study for any one part. The key to the CPA exam is just throwing time at the material and concentrating enough to absorb it little by little. So, I really can't trust that he actually studied that much and got a score that low; it just doesn't add up.

It could be: 1)he really did study and did poorly 2)his studying skills are weak 3)he is lying about studying because he isn't motivated or isn't ready to give it his all

I don't think any of the reasons are good enough for a break up unless you are having other issues. But you shouldn't force yourself to remain in the relationship if the cpa is really important to you and he isn't doing it. If you decide to stay together I think you should talk to him about how to improve his studying skills or what is keeping him from putting in more effort. Also ask him if the cpa is really something he wants to do right now. Maybe he would be better off focusing on it at another time in his life.

Maybe he said he wants to take the cpa because he knows that's what you want to hear or people around him want to hear. I've been in this position before when getting my cpa was more important to people around me than it was to me. I was studying but not really putting in enough effort. It needs to click in his head that it is what he really wants to do.

I think he needs to come clean on if the CPA is something he truly wants. My feeling is he doesn't want it – There was a reason why he put it off two years ago. And if he's just going through the motions now to try and make you happy, then that's a disaster waiting to happen. Only will result in wasted time, money, energy, and effort and that will not be fun for either of you. Talk it out and figure out what's really going on.

Why don't you just tell him that you won't have sex with him until he gets a 75?
