I’ve seen there are a couple threads on this already from 4 or 5 years ago so I just wanted an update here from newer candidates. I’m trying to get licensed in NY but I work in NJ. Most of my supervisors are actively licensed in NJ. Are they able to sign off on the work experience? Has anyone else been in the same situation as this?

From the the NY Board site:

The applicant will record their claimed experience on the application (Form 1). The Form 4B(s) – Verification of Experience by Supervisor must be submitted by the CPA supervisor. Form 4B(s) submitted by the applicant will not be accepted.

Acceptable experience may be earned in a public accounting firm, government, private industry or an educational institution. The experience can be in one of the following service areas: accounting, attest, compilation, management advisory, financial advisory, taxation, or consulting skills. The experience must be gained under the supervision of a U.S. certified public accountant who is properly licensed and registered or authorized to practice in the jurisdiction of their principal place of business. If a CPA supervisor was not properly licensed or registered or authorized to practice in the state where they practiced, the experience cannot be accepted.

    Good luck!

@monikernc thanks I have seen that. Just a couple of my supervisors said they couldn't since their license wasn't active in NY but I think this proves that as long as they are active in the location/state in which my work experience occurred, then they can. I'm in industry and they're older my supervisors so they are probably not as aware of the rules as to who can amd cannot sign off.

It will probably take longer to have the experience verified, because NY will have to check with NJ to make sure they were licensed and active during the time period they are attesting to, but it seems completely possible for a NJ licensed CPA to sign off on your experience if you are working in NJ. Good luck with getting licensed.

Just show them the NY page I copied that from. Be sure they submit the form directly to the board. It should be easy if they are actively licensed to work in NJ and are willing to attest to your experience. Get on it!
