Reciprocity (Colorado)

    Hey Ninjas,

    I’ve been residing & working in Colorado for 2+ years.
    I took the exams in Cali before I moved out to Colorado and didn’t want to go thru the hassle of transferring everything over, so I obtained my license for the very first time from California about a week ago.
    I left public accounting on 12/4/18 and will be joining private sector on 12/17/18.

    W/ that said, does one have to obtain reciprocity even if he/she doesn’t intend on performing any public services? As far as usage of the designation is concerned, I was told I could do something like, “First Name Last Name, CPA (California).”

    I have been talking w/ Colorado Board of Accountancy, but they keep giving me half-assed responses w/o really reading thru what I wrote about my situation. My call went directly to their voicemail which didn’t help.

    I realize final call will be made by the Board, but just wanted see if any other Ninjas had to go thru something similar. Thanks!

    @Jombe, did you ever find resolution to this?

    I am in a similar situation. I moved to CO at the end of my testing experience and chose to complete my license in my native state. I didn't want to resubmit transcripts and start from square 1 in Colorado as it seemed easier to transfer the completed product (license) over instead. My plans changed and now I work in private industry in CO. I'm wondering if I even need to apply for reciprocity? It seems to me that I am licensed to practice public accounting in the state I am licensed in. However, I am no longer providing assurance services or signing off on tax returns or anything at all.

    I'm curious as to what your experience was. The Colorado Board of Accountancy website/reciprocity resources aren't very clear.

    lol, didn't even realize this was my post.

    Here's the response from Colorado Board of Accountancy

    “If you are not going to do work that requires a CPA license and not going to attest then you do not need a CPA license in Colorado. I am unsure why you are inquiring why you think you would need a Colorado CPA license if you are clearly stating your job does not require a CPA license nor attesting.”

    She got a little snarky with me, because she kept NOT READING what I wrote and gave me a generic answer over and over again and I had to get a little snarky first in order to get the response I needed…

    Thanks so much for your response! It's comforting to know that they told you point blank that you don't need reciprocity if your job doesn't require CPA designation/assurance services. That was my hope all along.

    It's annoying that this isn't clear on their website AND that they were so snarky though. Wouldn't they rather people ask for clarification and be transparent than just do whatever they want and then get penalized for it? There is virtually no helpful information on the CO Board website.

    Keep in mind that more often than not when you write in to the CPA Board of your state you are talking to secretarial staff.
    Most of your questions are probably well above their paygrade.
    I believe in NY if you are doing a job “with numbers” they consider you to be performing accounting services, and require registration.
    Regardless of whether you are performing attest or not.
    Each state is different, and if you have it if writing from the CPA Board, at least you have a fallback.

    @Recked – I know, I know… it doesn't help ease the frustration though. 🙁

    @FastFalcon
