Using '0' or leaving blank on SIMS

I wanted to get your opinions on leaving items blank or inputting zeros on SIMS. I just finished taking Becker’s FAR Final Exam 2 for my test this Wednesday and had 100% on the SIMS except for the Stock Options tab which had JEs for computing expense and the issuing of the options. All of my JEs were correct except I was marked down for not answering the credit or debit columns when it was unnecessary (e.g. leaving the credit column blank for expenses).

I spoke with one of the Becker Instructors and they said “it depends” on how the actual exam would score these responses. Some will take this as a sign of not finishing and others will register it as wrong. Does anyone have a more definitive take on this?

Wouldn't “not finishing” and “registering it wrong” be the same thing?

Personally, I don't leave anything blank, unless it is a drop down menu that requires no entry.

Some sims will have a JE with drop down menu.

If there is an option of “no entry necessary” only use that if the information given requires absolutely no JE to be posted.

If they give 3 lines and the JE only requires 2, I enter the 2 line entry. If able I will put 0 in the other cells just to show I did it on purpose, but leave the drop downs blank.

NEVER leave a calculation blank… I am certain that I have had questions on a FAR simulation that required a calculation and a response, and the answer was zero. Idem for REG.

In terms of journal entries, I think you're specifically instructed to leave them blank if you don't need the line (it will tell you this in each simulation). For example, the simulation might give you six lines for a journal entry when you only need four; you don't need to do anything with the remaining two. A funny thing happened to me on FAR though… I was asked for a journal entry on one of my relatively weaker areas, thought I came up with the perfect entry which was 9 lines, only to start to enter it and realize that there were only 8 lines available. I literally spent the last hour of my test on that one simulation (and didn't get anywhere).

ok so if you select “no entry necessary”…do you put it on both lines as a credit and debit? and do you put zeros in the cells for amounts?

zero is a number, so unless the answer is zero do not put zero's. If it is a journal entry complete it accordingly. with debits and credits, and accounts.. some times there is a no entry in the drop down menu you can use that if necessary.
