I wanted to see if anyone in the forum was working towards a being a certified healthcare financial professional. I just started today and I am already bored. Though I am glad that I am not studying FAR or AUD right now.

I would think it is more for a CFO position in a hospital. I think a controller is more accounting based and the CFO requires more knowledge of things like billing, reimbursement and hospital revenue cycle in addition to accounting.

I took it a couple years ago when I first took over the controller position at the Medical Laboratory where I work and I failed it. It was geared more towards hospital CFO or Controller than laboratory and there were a lot of questions that were specifically hospital related that I simply couldn't answer. As the controller I am very concerned with revenue cycle, billing and reimbursement so it would be relevant for either CFO or Controller, however I guess it would depend on the size of the facility you work at as to whether it would be related to your position or not. After the test I spoke with the guy in charge of the exams at HFMA and he told me that the CHFP wasn't really geared for Laboratory management so I I did not take it again.

@jadams I just looked at the link you posted and the content of the exam looks like it has changed since I took it. in 2011. Do your materials seem to be more hospital specific?

I have only been studying for a few days but so far it does seem to be geared toward hospitals. We have a lot of ratios to learn and some of them talk about bed days or patient days.

Those were the ones that killed me on the test. Bad thing is, once you miss too many to have a passing grade the test stops scoring and tells you that you made a zero so I have no idea what my score actually was or what the weak areas were. It just popped up on the screen after the test was over. At least that was how it was in 2011. I took it when they first changed over to the new test so maybe they improved that feature since then.

@bnrhilton I work for a nonprofit medical center in Arizona, we have a foundation and a physician group. I am currently the Senior Financial Analyst but I interview today for the Controller position.
