Thanks for starting Q3 group. Q2 ppl are way ahead of the game and I can't contribute much there since I am only barely starting. But I'll still be posting my problems there since they all know what they are doing :/
Planning to take it in July. Date still not decided. It will depend on how prepared I feel by mid June.May 15, 2014 at 11:16 pm #597436
i'm signed up to take FAR July 1st. Feeling the pressure to wrap up my chapters, Currently on unit 12 of Gleim – Noncurrent Liabilities.May 16, 2014 at 12:54 am #597437
Woot! Quarter 3! I am taking it July 17th! I still feel SO behind but I am pushing through. I have sadly started to rewrite my own notes… which I hate doing but it really really helps!May 16, 2014 at 1:54 pm #597438Determined CPAParticipant

Taking the exam on July 11. Let's do this.May 16, 2014 at 4:47 pm #597441NCcpaHopefulMember
July is my busy month at work (corporate tax) so I am taking FAR in August. Took it in April and made a 72 🙁 I've already been studying like crazy (I've done 500 questions in the last week and a half) and I'm hoping I will retain most of it by August!!May 16, 2014 at 5:20 pm #597442AnonymousInactive
I haven't officially signed up for FAR yet, but I'm about 31% through the material according to CPAexcel. my school is taking forever to get my degree and grades posted to my transcripts and sent. I'm getting kind of nervous because I planned on taking it in the beginning of July so I'd have plenty of time to study for AUD at the end of August, but slots are going to fill up and I'm not going to be able to take it till later in July and that's going to throw everything off. come on, school. stop screwing me.
plus my CPAexcel schedule has me working towards taking FAR in the beginning of july, if it gets pushed to mid-july I'm going to have weeks of nothing and I'll end up forgetting everything. I guess at that point I'd just do two weeks straight of MCQs…May 16, 2014 at 6:07 pm #597443NCcpaHopefulMemberMay 16, 2014 at 11:28 pm #597445AnonymousInactive
tackling bonds one last time today before I move on to the next thing on my to do list.May 17, 2014 at 1:03 am #597446
I am currently trying to bust through the first section on the Ninja mcqs to get to the adaptive learning phase. Well today is my day off. I think my weekend plans are study first thing Saturday for about 3 hours. Girls told me I studied too long on weekends so I am taking some advice. Then Sunday study as my hubby does his homework for about 3 hours so I can lounge around in the morning. Then back at it Monday morning at 4:30 hopefully. I am definitely relying a lot on the ninja mcq at this point. I am not even watching the videos and so far I feel pretty good. Obviously I have a lot of improvement to go but its better then watching the videos again.May 17, 2014 at 1:45 am #597447
@L stevens I think some people can be surprised how much of FAR they already know, because it is basically an intermediate accounting course. I've learned to let some things be, and don't bog down your brain redoing things u already get, it's too easy to confuse yourself with this amount of info. So i def think you can overdo studying, especially if u already get a lot of the info
Anyway i'm currently up @starbucks studying. at least to 11. Hoping to study for at least 6 hours tomorrow, and sunday. I really need the practice because I notice my brain checking out after maybe 2 hours which isn't good for when i actually take the examMay 17, 2014 at 7:21 am #597448AnonymousInactive
calling it a night. Definitely did better on bonds this time around. I was not able to do all the 58 MCQs but still satisfied with my progress. I am planning to review F2-F4 for the next 3 days before I move on to F6.May 17, 2014 at 9:10 am #597449hongchadolMember

@Nicole. I know the first time I took FAR I got to the Sims and looked at how long they were and felt crushed. So yes lol try to not get so tired while studying. Second time I still had the energy but I just didn't know the material. This time around I'm trying to be a lot more positive and bust out the mcqs. I think with studying you'll get there though. Just keep the momentum up at least that's what I tell myself lol.
I'm hoping to post a ton on here so I'll be held more accountable for studying. I'll be going to Barnes and noble when they open since I have a gift card there.May 18, 2014 at 1:03 pm #597453May 18, 2014 at 2:52 pm #597454magatha12Member
Good to know!! What is your study plan for your exam? I am taking is close to your date. I'm just reading the book now to get through it (Am I crazy for doing no MCQs in between?), the videos aren't really helping me much so I'm skipping those unless I really don't understand something.
Good luck to you too!! 🙂May 18, 2014 at 9:03 pm #597455GTAccountantParticipant
I'm new to the boards and DEFINITELY need some encouragement as I tackle FAR, which is my first exam.
Since I've received my job offer, and I complete my masters in July, I figured I should tackle the Exam. I am using Becker and I've watched a few lectures and did some assignment HWs and I am not doing too well (~60s).
Hopefully by being on board I can gain encouragement!May 18, 2014 at 9:31 pm #597456AnonymousInactive
@GTAccoutnant..60s is not bad on the first attempt. Its only going to get better. I hv been scoring on low 40s and 50s. Its very depressing but I noticed on my second attempt I def did better. I am still not done with the book. Starting F6 today but I did try reviewing the previous chapters.May 18, 2014 at 10:11 pm #597457
This is a quick synopsis of my method:
-I read the study text and do the MCQs together. I pretty much skip everything else.
-98% of the time I skip the videos because they really don't help. I actually look at the power point slides to see if there is anything interesting, and if there is (like a lot of hand written notes), I watch the videos. For example, the consolidation videos were very good, and I actually think they were more helpful than the study text.
-Personally, I tried the NINJA method for FAR on my first attempt, and I didn't like it. Reading the text strait through did not help with my retention at all. A lot of times the text is dense, but combine those with the MCQs and I see the concepts much better. A good example is the section on Natural Resources. The text was, for me, hard to follow. After doing the MCQs, the text made a lot more sense.
-I don't take copious written notes, I make (digital) flashcards. I used a program called Anki. I review a small section of flashcards everyday. This keeps the material fresh. I would never remember the formula for pension expense if I read the text once and didn't see it again till I got back to the MCQs.
Hope that makes sense!May 18, 2014 at 11:53 pm #597458shankysaysMember
I haven't scheduled it yet, but I'm planning on taking FAR (for the first time) in mid to late July. Using Roger's USB course and the Wiley homework books. Started studying a week ago; so far things are going well, but the amount of material is just staggering. I hope I've given myself enough time. One nice thing is that people have told me the exam has started getting heavy on governmental/nonprofit, which is what I do for a living, so hopefully I won't need to hit that section quite as hard.
As someone mentioned above, the simulations are pretty intimidating at first glance!May 19, 2014 at 12:41 am #597459
@shaknysays – I know I focused a lot on government and not for profit my first go around with far. Completely neglected everything else and scored a 60. So most of my final review was governmental and not for profit. When I got my summary of how I did and I did as good as people who passed on those two topics and poop of the other three. lol I called the Yaeger people to get their advice (big mistake) and she told me that I pretty much didn't study. Tried the videos again and didn't review like I should had got a 58. That hurt. This time its all review. I pretty much threw WTB to the side b/c I remembered all questions. So Ninja MCQ for me. So my advice is knock out those two but don't do what I did and forget the others lol I also suggest doing a few sims… I know which ones I am focusing on… lol
So when is everyone's test date? If its been scheduled.May 19, 2014 at 1:06 am #597460
a gleim prep tip said that the CSO tells you what percentage of the exam is to what area, however that doesn't mean that the ‘group' and topic actually changes. So how some people said they felt too much of their exam focused on NFP and governmental may be true, but that was simply the topic, you could still be getting tested on framework, disclosures, error corrections, etc etcMay 19, 2014 at 4:03 am #597461AnonymousInactive
I'm taking FAR on July 20th, it's right after month end closing at work and it's Monday, so I can relax on weekend. I'm half way through my study materials and planning to complete all of them by 2nd week of June, re-write my notes then will do unlimited MCQs and SIMs thru 2nd week of July. Good luck to all of us!May 19, 2014 at 4:06 am #597462AnonymousInactive
so far July 11th for me. Hopefully I won't be changing it.May 19, 2014 at 6:10 am #597463kappa1032Participant
Does anybody have a link for remembering deferred tax assets & liabilities? I'm going through the chapter and it's just not sinking in – I'm pretty sure I could figure it out when the MCQ's come around but I also want to understand it from a conceptual level…May 19, 2014 at 9:52 am #597464
