I thought I would create this new topic for those that are taking REG in the October/November testing window. I am taking this test on October 19. Anybody have any experience with this section?

ooh I heard that only one was graded. I wish it was the other way around haha. At least it takes out the chance of the easier one not being graded! My second was definitely harder, but overall I think I did about the same on both.

I thought they were both difficult but the written communication was easier. Although I only wrote a couple paragraphs. I'm new at this, so I'm not sure the expectation of “volume” on the written memos.

    I'll Pass Eventually
    REG (67, 66), BEC (79), FAR (5/26/10), AUD (August 2010)

oh I agree. By easier, I def don't mean easy! just that the topics were more familiar so I had a better approach to it I think. But yeah, the communications were easier than I expected. Its a client memo so you need a beginning, middle, and end just as you would write to a client I guess. When I wrote memos like this for school, I had one paragraph in explaining the situation and overall decision/result. Then one to three paragraphs explaining the decision process, and a paragraph emphasizing the decision/result again.. a normal conclusion. I think I had 4 paragraphs in each one

Thanks for all the insight. I'm going to take some practice tests in which I shoot to finish all the MC within an hour and 10 minutes max (20-23 min per testlet).

    ? AUD - 87 (8/12/09)
    ? REG - 77 (1/15/10
    ? BEC - 77 (1/6/09 - Expired) / 79 (11/18/10)
    ? FAR - 75 (2/11/11)

By the way, while we're on the subject… are there “pre-test” questions in the MC? If so, how many per testlet? I know for my previosu exams they threw out 5 questions in each 30 question testlet. How many do they throw out in REG? 3,4,0?

    ? AUD - 87 (8/12/09)
    ? REG - 77 (1/15/10
    ? BEC - 77 (1/6/09 - Expired) / 79 (11/18/10)
    ? FAR - 75 (2/11/11)

Yes – up to 4-5 MCQs per testlet on REG can be pretest.

I write about this more in my book if interested…

    26. How many questions on the CPA Exam are pre-test?

After reading through everyone's comments on the REG section this testing window. The difficulty of the simulations is beginning to worry me. I am using Becker in review and took BEC earlier this window and felt like I had done really well (even though it will be forever until I get my results back). Now I am taking REG here in a few weeks. I feel as if Becker does a great job preparing for the multiple choice section by using examples and great explanations on a lot of topics. However, after reading posts about the simulations for REG does anyone have any solid suggestions on how to best prepare for those? Becker does offer simulations to practice with but after reading posts it seems like the difficulty level is not comparable to what is seen on the exam. This is my first section, considering I have only taken BEC thus far, that involves simulations. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

How would you compare the actual questions on the exam to the Becker questions? Any advice would be nice. Thanks.

Keep in mind that most review courses get their questions from the same source: they buy a license to use them from the AICPA, which course vs course vs course – you will see an overlap in questions…they get them from the AICPA.

I am not a proponent of practicing sims…I explain this in my book if you're interested… 🙂

Yeah, I am sure they are all the same. But I thought they were comparable. They focused on the same areas.. none of the questions on the exam were too surprising.. even when I didn't know the answer I was sure that becker went over it, I just didn't focus on it or remember it

KT – Where you one of those people that went into the exam not really studying the law portion of the exam? If so, please advise if you regret that or not? I have spent most my time with Becker in R1-R4, not totally neglecting R5-7, however just not spending nearly as much time on it as R1-R4. Is this a bad approach?! Thoughts?

well, whatever I did.. I haven't gotten my score back so who knows if what I did was good or bad. I don't feel like I got a 95- I'd also be surprised if I failed.. but you never know.

But anyways, I definitely studied law. For my review, I made sure that I knew R1-R4, then spent like a week on R5-R7.. then another couple days doing all chapters. Law was harder for me, but its definitely a huge part of the exam too.. so I wouldn't skip over it. But, someone told me not to want to know everything, just be able to know whats in the review. I made sure I was confident with the MCQs in becker, and I re-read the chapters probably twice, so three times total.

I think it also has to do with what you can retain- for some reason I couldn't retain the law sections as easily as tax.. so I had to spend more time on them. I had to make my own outlines to keep R5 & R6 straight. Just be comfortable with the chapters..
