BEC – Harder than I thought!

    I have to admit studying for BEC is much harder than I thought it would be! I have made it though Becker’s first 3 chapters – COSO/IC, Cost Accounting, and Financial Managment. Cost Accounting was very challenging. Perhaps harder and more time consuming than any chapters in FAR or AUD. Financial Management was not nearly as bad as Cost Accounting, but it was still very labor intensive with all of the formulas. I hope the next 3 chapters lighten up a bit, although I feel IT (chp 4) will be pretty technical and a little foreign. Anyhow, don’t underestimate studying for BEC like I did.

    Thoughts??

    I thought BEC cost accounting was difficult too. Mainly bc I forgot how to do basic algebra (no jokes, so if I passed, anyone can pass). I had to ask my husband how to calculate square root so you know I can't be that smart right? I had to go through all the multiple choice questions related to cost accounting three times without skipping one question. ON exam day I would say, I still only understood 80% of it. NOt surprising since I got a 77. I was just fortunate economic and IT questions were easy. The only two topics I scored “strong” on. Think I would fail otherwise.

    I agree, I thought BEC was going to be a cake walk since so many said it was so easy. (no worries, not blaming anyone) So I am doing the plus videos and am second guessing should i keep using the videos or just read the book, because its been soooo long since I dealt with stock and stock prices and value, etc….do we need to know this? I am short on time I really don't want to focus on something I don't need.

    Ugh, tell me about it. I thought this one would be a nice break after how much material was in AUD, but I was so wrong. I might have had a full on meltdown today about how dumb I feel not being able to comprehend the economics stuff. I haven't taken an econ class in almost a decade. It's like no matter how much I look at the notes and read the explanations to the questions, I'm still not grasping it. I feel like the econ stuff is harder than the cost accounting for me.

    Is it over yet?

    BEC for me was thought. I didn't pass it. I was strong in cost and econ and FLUNK COSO AND IT. I say study all of it, and know and memorize IT and COSO concepts ALL OF IT. Best of luck!

    It get's a little better after 3, but there's a lot of weird formulas in chapter 6 too. Stick with it. You'll get the hang of it after the second time through the questions.

    I had the exact same thoughts on the first three chapters as well. But Cost clicked my second go around during my final review stage. You got this!

    Thanks friends! Yea, I have found the first 3 chapters to be fairly difficult. BEC has definitely not been easy as u all have stated. I'll just keep grinding through. At least there are no TBS!

    Agreed. I have gotten so frustrated studying for the section, much more difficult than audit in my opinion. Although I didn't do great in the cost or econ classes I took in college, so not that surprising.

    BEC was the exam I struggled with the most. I had to take it 5 dang times before I finally passed. You can get through it, you gotta keep on keepin' on.

    @AccountantPinkHair

    Damn that takes a lot of mental toughness to go through it 5 times. It's so much harder having failed to have to retake it over and over than to pass it the first time. Congrats on getting through the exam. Incredible accomplishment!

    Do you have any tips for BEC? Things to watch out for?

    @chrislo2007

    Thanks! It's kinda still sinking in that I'm done with these tests!

    Ya, it really really sucked to take the same test 5 times. I had a hard time pinpointing exactly where I was going wrong. In the software (Ninja MCQ) I would be scoring an overall average of 80's or in the case of Corp Gov't in the 90's then get my score report (not to be taken too seriously) I would show strong/normal in the categories I thought I was struggling with and below average with topics I was scoring good or high in. I always scored strong in writing comp section. I wouldn't say I gained a lot of knowledge between attempt 3, 4 and 5 I seriously think I just caught the right test on my 5th time. In fact when I walked out of my 5th attempt I was so sure I failed. It was the hardest version of BEC I had ever taken. I was sure that I was going to be taking it a 6th time. I was SHOCKED when I got an 81. I wish I had some advice, but I really don't besides don't give up!

    Oh man that sounds awful. Sometimes it really is just the luck of the draw. Congratulations! I'm sure you went through hell with people around you not understanding why you struggled to pass it. I can totally empathize. It must have felt amazing to have that monkey off your back.

    No worries, that is also great advice! Thank you

    Bro, BEC is tricky. I'm on my 4th attempt. 71, 72, & 73. Didn't think any of the attempts were that hard. If I get a 74 this time I'm going to flip!
