    Becker Question –

    Hello my another71 people.

I have come across a problem that is mildly debilitating me in my studies.
As we all know FAR is considered one of the hardest due to the mass amount of information one is expected to hold in their brains.

Today I set out to review FAR 4 consolidations, FV, equity method and intercompany transactions. I have been learning this all week and felt as though I was making good progress. I opened my first of MCQ to review and freshen up only to completely confuse myself and send myself into this world of WHAT AM I DOING.

I felt like I opened the questions for the first time and couldnt recall anything I learned literally yesterday. How are you all continuing to freshen up on information you have learned last week or the week prior? I find myself memorizing questions that I dont fully understand and know that’s the quickest way to FAIL these exams.

Any words of wisdom are greatly appreciated.

    Signing off,

    Frustrated CPA candidate

Hi Lampy44, I am in the same boat as you! I just finished Becker's F4 and I feel like I have already forgotten everything I previously learned. Going forward I'm going to take my time to really understand each module and I think I'm going to take advantage of the flashcards and progress test (because I haven't been using those enough).

But any other advice on this would be much appreciated!

Work out each problem by hand, don't just jump through the calculations mentally because you already memorized the answer.
Once a week revisit some questions from previous units to try and keep the concepts some what fresh in your mind.

After failing FAR the first time, I focused on MCQ , notes and rereading problem sections in the book (latter not very helpful because questions far exceed scope of Becker book).

This was why I plowed through as much video/book content as possible as fast as I could and then focused on MCQ after. That way – you're getting a little of each topic in virtually every session of 30 questions.

That technique was “enough” to finish Aud and BEC too.

I'm in the same boat. My plan is to have a cumulative review day for progress tests and sims. I try to flip through flash cards when I can. Not sure if it's helping but I figured it couldn't hurt.

I'm interested in what others are doing.

I am a mix of learning styles, so I try to incorporate all ways of learning. Right now I'm able to retain about 80% (at least this is how I feel) of everything I'm reviewing for FAR. I watch the lectures first, then I read the text. It sounds funny but as I am reading the text I also talk out loud like I am talking to someone else and teaching them the concepts. It helps me recall also a lot of what the lectures stated, and helps me put everything in my own words. My husband is probably learning FAR just by listening to me talk in the other room LOL

I have it set up so that I will be done with my review materials about 2 weeks before my exam. During those 2 weeks I plan to focus on the topics I struggle with the most, as well as pound out MCQs and sims. Right now I am doing MCQ about 30 questions a couple times a week on past topics to keep them on my brain.

Of course I haven't taken any sections yet. FAR is scheduled for me in November. I could fail, but so far this has worked for me for retaining information. If I am having trouble with something then I try to review it as much as possible but I move on so I don't get behind and cause myself too much stress. If I get too behind I won't have time to review at the end.

Though I am one of the oldest CPA candidates here at @another71, but I'm quite new here myself. My recommendation,
follow a link like this one: https://www.another71.com/cpa-exam-forum/topic/far-exam-experience-official-thread/

There's a Ninja here that is remarkable, on how he's closing to become a CPA. Please go over the thread.

Also, there's a lot of Becker students here. Make a list and follow their updates/thread. I find it helpful. I am an old Becker student, my materials are few years older version of Becker materials. But I have unlimited access to MCQs/SIMs and textbooks.

Be patient and do not get frustrated. Do not waste a lot of time bouncing back and forth between sections, just keep working through the material. Taking notes during each module and taking progress tests after each full section will help you retain the information. It really didn't click for me until my review where I really focused on MCQs and occasional sims for practice. During MCQs, I would make sure to read all of the explanations (right or wrong) and then make note of trouble areas. In between MCQs, I would reread notes or review sections in the book that I needed to brush up on.

Patience, practice, persistence and you will get there.
