California Licensing – Appearing Before QC

    Hello fellow Ninjas,

It’s been about ~5 months since I submitted my application for licensure w/ attest authority and after few updates here and there, I got another status update letter from CBA today.

“…you may need to appear before our QC with work papers before a license with attest authority can be issued… Alternately, you may choose to change your application to seek licensure without attest authority (general)…”

    1) What do they mean by “may” need to appear?!?! – I already sent an email to CBA asking for clarification, but man, this process has been frustrating as is, did they really just use the word “may”?!

    2) Did anyone else have to do this? I am currently working at a public accounting firm as an Audit Associate, but I wouldn’t need to sign off on anything for next 3-4 years at least. And, that’s IF I am still in public accounting by then. What diff would it make to get a “general” license w/o attest authority vs. one w/ attest authority? I can still call myself, “Jombe, CPA”, right?

Anybody that got licensed via California Board of Accountancy who had similar thing happen to them, or even people from other states who had similar experience – PLEASE CHIME IN! It’s ******* Friday night and I am here sitting in front of my computer all fidgety and I am about to lose my ****.

From what I know, the general license does not give you the power to sign off the audit report vs. the license with attest authority. But you are CPA w/ or w/o the attest experience. I am applying for the license udner CA and I agree that it took them forever to review my application like 3 months already passed and they still told me the same line “your application is currently not reviewed by an analyst yet, it will take one ro two week for this to be processed.” So annoying and I feel like their call center is out of state or something because they sounded disconnected every time I called them.

My coworker had to appear in front of the CA board with a sample of his work papers years ago. He worked with his CPA father and I think the board wanted to see if his audit experience was legitimate. Is there anything in your audit experience, such as a related party, that the board would want to verify the sign off your experience?

Kel Kel Kel – nope. I am the sole family member residing in United States. No relatives either. 🙁 I guess I will just have to wait and see what CBA says.

What I didn't list below was done in 2017 (such as passing exams, ethics exam, sent transcripts, etc)

    4/26/18 live scan sent
5/2/18 application rec'd at CBA (via UPS tracking, not acknowledgement card)
5/8/18 emailed CBA asking why my check hasn't been cashed
5/9/18 per CBA, it takes 3~4 weeks for the application to go from the mail room to whoever that reviews it
6/5/18 Rec'd acknowledgement card saying CBA rec'd my application
8/13/18 Rec'd a letter saying I didn't check off a box. Fixed the situation via email.
9/7/18 Status update letter – “We have received all of the documents required to initiate the evaluation of your application for licensure. Results of this review will be mailed to you in approximately four to six weeks”
9/17/18 – Status update letter – “…you may need to appear before our QC with work papers before a license with attest authority can be issued… Alternately, you may choose to change your application to seek licensure without attest authority (general)…”
9/19/18 – Status updat letter – appear before QC on 10/24/18.
10/24/18 – Appeared before QC to talk about my attest experience. I was told I will get a license w/ attest authority at the end of interview.
11/6/18 – Got a letter asking for initial licensing fee and that I will get a license w/ attest authority
11/9/18 – payment arrived at CBA.

I will start checking the web sometime next week to see if my license # will appear…
