Coming back for another go at it…

I worked for EY in 2012-2014 and got a few years experience in Audit. Unfortunately during that time I only passed 2 of 4 of the CPA exams and then they eventually expired. Fast forward to today, I am thinking about going back and giving it another go after 2 years off. For a time (the past 2 years that I have done nothing), I just had the mindset that it wasn’t possible. I have done a few things in the meantime, that were difficult and have sort of given me a confidence boost thinking I can do this (finished my MBA, did an Ironman, etc). I think the biggest part for me will be getting mentally back into it as I remember how draining it was. With all that being said, can you guys help me with a few questions below?

    1) If I was approved to sit for the CPA exam in 2012, I assume I am still qualified to sit for it? I just need to pay another few hundred dollars for the NTS?

    2) Any good recommendations on a review course? I didn’t do that well with Becker as I felt like going through the book we just highlighted 75% of the material. I read that Wiley does a good job at breaking it down into small chunks which might be more up my alley. Also, I enjoy learning through Multiple choice questions as well. I like the Ninja supplements too. I haven’t been on this site since late 2013-early 2014 so I will have to check out what has been updated since then.

    Thanks in advance!

Hey! Your story is kinda like mine. I passed 3 sections, then all 3 expired so I'm starting over.

    1) yes and yes, just log into CPACentral

    2) I used Becker last time and I'm using Becker again, but with Ninja Notes to supplement. Not sure if thats the best route, hopefully others will share what works for them

Did you hear the exam is redesigned starting in April?

Welcome back to the fight..lol There are so many changes occurring with testing and study materials. Do the research before you start to spend money. I like the ninja products even though I started with cpaexcel. I like the small piece concept but in crunch time you need to put those pieces together so that they are meaningful. With that budget your time wisely. Good luck to you and please let the gang know how studying is going for you.

The exam has been reformatted so instead of 60/40 MCQ and Sims, now its 50/50. More Sims and more emphasis on applying the material instead of just memorization. March 10th is the last day to take an exam in the old familiar format.

chynablue, how did you let 3 exams expire? I can't fathom putting in all that work and not finishing the last one. Much respect for coming back for a second attempt after going through that

I'm currently using Becker. I never read a single page in the book. For me it's a waste of time as you don't know how much you retain by simply reading the chapters. I just did the multiple choice questions over and over until it stuck. I was able to pass on first attempt using this method. I've seen both Wiley and Rogers multiple choice questions and I would have to say I wouldn't have done so well with those. If you've reviewed all of Beckers multiple choices at least twice and still fail, then I would say Becker is not for you.

Wow, I read the Becker book 2 times through for each section. Do whatever works for you, but reading the book helps me fill in gaps and really help me understand the underlying concepts behind the MC
