To all those who work in Tax side of public accounting. I am currently work for state as a tax auditor and audit different entities ranging from mom-pops c-corp to F500 companies. I analyze 1120, schedule C, Schedule A, Schedule D, 4562, 851, and 4797 to see weather numbers on state return makes sense. I am learning a lot and enjoying the tax side more than audit. Do you guys think my current work is relevant to break in public accounting. Now that I have pass my CPA exams and looking to break into public. I don’t mind taking staff or 1st year roll in tax. Please share your experience. Thank you.

working for IRS or var. state DOR's exposes you to “the other side.”

that is extremely relevant experience in public accounting.

Completely relevant. What tax does is prepare tax returns on a larger scale, if you're preparing a tax return for an entity, you have to do their TB and other relevant schedules in order to complete their tax return. Estimates and extensions.

Also, I found tax a LOT easier to get interviews for.

Yes because most public accounting firms have a tax division so your gov't tax experience will be extremely helpful to their operations internally and externally.

Definitely relevant, as others have said. I just wanted to add that the top priority for first year public hires is normally personality, so make sure to not neglect your soft skills and likability factor 😉

@malotu Thank you for your input. Part of my job is to communicate with different taxpayers on daily basis. So I get to brush up my communication skills and I try to engage with them as much as possible, given I have somewhat introvert personality.
