    Hi Guys,

How many hours do you guys think I need to study to pass FAR?

I know there isn’t a specific number to it but I’d love to know the best range.

    AUD - 77
    BEC - 86
    FAR - NINJA in Training
    REG - 78

Really depends on the person. How good their undergraduate accounting courses were, when they last took accounting classes, how they do in exams, etc.

But I would say anywhere between 120 to 200 hours, with 150 hours being the median.

I needed a lot more as it was my first test and I wanted to make sure that I passed. I put in 300 hours, but in retrospect they were inefficient hours as they were spread out over 3 months and a lot of that was getting into the groove of studying for the exams. Ended up with an 86.

    BEC - NINJA in Training
    FAR - 86
    REG - 89
Why do you lag?  What is it to you that idle tongues will wag?  Follow my steps through all such whisper of you.  Be as a tower of stone, unswayed by whatever the winds may do.  For when a man lets his attention stray, it saps his mind's force with continual change.  -Dante

Depends on your prior knowledge, academic talent and efficiency of your studying. Wiley CPA Excel recommends 200 hours but Becker puts the number at 240-300. That said, there are plenty of successful candidates who spent less than 100 and probably just as many who spent over 300. You might spend 10+ hours trying to understand cash flow calculations whereas somebody else might need only 10 minutes. Best to rely on yourself, not others, to measure your progress; budgeting 200 hours to pass the test when you need 100 or 300 can have some very negative consequences.

Yeah I personally did it around 120 hours or so, but I was fresh out of college, and I like to think I'm a rather efficient studier. Took me 7 weeks at around 15 hours a week, except last week probably did like 30. It's all about what works for you. I know I can't look at stuff for more than 2-3 hours at a time sometimes even in one day. My mind just won't let me study for long hours. However, those 2-3 hours were extremely productive and I didn't get distracted by my phone, social media, youtube, etc. So some people say they did 6-7 hour days but that doesn't include all the breaks and distractions that happen.

200 to 300 hours. 150 to 200 hours if you are fresh out of college and really, really strong in all areas of FAR. Don't short yourself because it's not worth it – especially with the new exam.

    Goodluck.
