    Hi guys,

I was planning to take FAR on Oct 19 however, I am still on F8 with Becker. I have been doing a light review of the previous chapters but it seems Govt and NFP are heavily tested areas. I have no background in them whatsoever so I want to make sure I have enough time to master them and then do a full review. I’m able to study full time but will need to travel 2 days for work between now and the exam. Is this still doable or should I reschedule? Any tips on the Govt/NFP studying as well as the final review will be appreciated.

You must know GOV'T and NFP.

For GOV'T, understand and remember the fund accounting and different funds used by GOV'T and purpose. Understand the modified accrual and full accrual accounting basis, and can identify what fund uses which accounting basis. Understand expenditure and can differentiate it with expense. You can draw a big picture of the structure of CAFR. Remember the minimum requirement for general-purpose reporting in CAFR. Understand and can journalize the budgetary accounting including encumbrance accounting. Understand difference between real accounting accounts and budgetary accounting accounts and encumbrance accounts. Can reconcile the total of fund balance of governmental fund at fund level with the total of net position of government activity at government-wide level; and reconcile the changes in fund balance with changes in net position for those two levels. Revenue recognition in governmental fund.

Those gov't funds just do what as their names tell you. For example, capital project fund is used for government's significant large project that lasts a period of time. And the debt related to this large project is in the debt service fund. Just like their names.

For NFP, understand and remember the categories of net assets. Understand the investments accounted in NFP. Understand different contributions. Remember the financial statements used, especially remember the statement of functional expenses for what type of NFP and understand the program service expense and support service expense. You can draw a small table chart for interest and dividend in cash flows for for-profit, IFRS, gov't, and NFP. It can be the titles for different reporting entities and four rows followed for interest received, dividend received, interest paid, and dividend paid. This tool can help you to remember their differences.

If you have a little bit of time, also understand how to calculate net patient revenue and net tuition fee revenue. Also know the differences of calculating net patient revenue between governmental hospital and NFP hospital.

Take the mock exam and see where you're at. Mid/upper 60's and up you have a decent chance, just review the heck out of Gov/NFP. Low 60s or less, push it back.

This is a long test window so plan now if you want to change! If it was me – I would not be able to do it in 10 days. But there was someone recently who passed FAR in 6 days so aptitude happens.

The tricky parts will be what is included in which statements, the types of government bodies and how they affect gov-wide reporting, JEs and modified accrual.

One of the tips that helped me was to pick 2 or 3 government agencies and review their financials. So instead of studying a bunch of theoretical stuff in the books, you can see the actual thing. Then when you're studying and then you see something in the gov financials – you realize – oh – that's how that works.

Other than that, I'd say plow through the content then get right to MCQ to get every variation of question you can.

F8 and F9 are very important and relatively easy to understand with Becker once you go through it a few times. I did not focus too much on F10 since I felt like it was full of random stuff and went deeper into a few topics that were already taught.

F8-F10 are doable in 4 days if you can put in 10 hours a day. I completed all of F9 in one day yesterday. Studied from 10 am to 10 pm. F8 would require more time than that though since it's more calculation heavy.
