Just took REG Q2 – Surprisingly easy

I am utterly stunned at how easy Q2 reg 2017 was, and I am not messing around here. I have no idea why people are so upset with the SIMS. If you have done simple 1040s with a K-1, 1099s, etc. and understand what these are, then you will be fine. I literally guessed through the multiple choice because people said that they ran out of time on SIMS. I did MC in 80 minutes. Rest I left for SIMS. At end of exam I had 30 minutes left. My advice is to do the same if you have little tax prep experience. If you do have tax prep experience, I suggest to not stress at all. The SIMS are very straightforward, its like preparing a 1040 through tax season, no joke.

best of luck to you, but if you read around a bit or talk to folks that have taken the exams several times they'll tell you that coming out of the exam saying the exam was easy doesn't bode well for most when the scores are released.

Hope your result is different and you aced it like it sounds like you think you did. What do you mean when you said you literally guessed through the MC? Not doing well on the MC spells disaster when striving for a 75.

Guessing through the MCQs could be a bad choice because they are still worth 50% of the overall grade I believe.

Took this exam back in Jan and got a 74. Being someone who has worked in tax and audit for the past 7 years, its rediculous that someone like me would not pass, so I really think the old exam was not testing the right things.
Not really guess, I meant not double or triple checking like I usually do. In hindsight, I probably should have considering I had 30 minutes left, but everyone said they ran out of time, hence my haste. Also you need to understand that 12 of the 78 MC won't count so it is very possible you are wasting time on a MC that won't even count. Just wanted to put my post out here for ppl to understand not to freak out like everyone else is on this website. The reg sims are nothing scary far-like. Good luck on far, remember to study nfps and governmental, surprisingly important.

“Easy” usually means u did not pass. Almost everyone I have spoken to complains about REG. Just saying.

@oisbuddy – “its rediculous that someone like me would not pass, so I really think the old exam was not testing the right things.”

    That's comical man.

I thought REG was pretty painless when I took it this time last year. Felt pretty comfortable with the whole test start to finish. I was worried because the previous 3 felt so insane, but I ended up passing those. So I though “sh-t, I got all easy questions because I was bombing.” Anyway, I passed REG with flying colors. Sometimes you just know the material really well, and the questions go your way.

You'll know come August, but your experience sounds a lot like my experience the first time I took AUD. I breezed through the MC and actually found them easy and just about the same with the SIMs. Also, I finished with 40 minutes left. I felt so good after and actually felt like it was really easy. Got my score: 71. Could not believe it. However, as long as you felt like you did your best, we're not the ones to say whether you passed or failed, but we'll see…

Thanks for input guys, just have to wait and see. I don't care if I fail it, the reason I posted this is so people understand that this new reg exam is not all that bad IF you have tax experience preparing 1040s. I do about 70 each year during tax season.

I took REG again last week and I will say that's not at all how I felt with my sims, and I have a good amount of experience with 1040s. I think the exam is so random that there's not a whole lot of point in comparing what one person thinks compared to the other because you never know what's going to show up.

I think the point of the sims now is to test candidates for what they will face when they start working. Honestly, if I was right out of school and studying with becker, I would have no clue on the sims, which makes me question how becker is preparing people. I used becker, but 80% of the stuff on the sims was something I know from work and something becker did not teach me. I also have to add that I do my fair share of 1120s, 1065s and 990s, so maybe that helps a little.

Just got my reg score back, passed with a 81 on Reg. From someone who completes at least 150 – 200 tax returns each year, failing on the reg exam was just an insult; on the old reg exam that is. The new reg exam is a godsend for people who have tax experience. For people who do not, I suggest to take my advice. Quickly finish the MC and spend ALOT of time on SIMS.
