Need advice on what to do

I graduated in May and I began working at a firm in September so it’s almost 5 months since I began work but I’ve been having some issues and I would like some advice on what to do.

For starters, I feel like the pay im receiving is below what the average starting pay is for new staff accountants. On top of that, the firm I’m working at mentioned in their ad that I would be given a salary plus overtime but I noticed that I’m being paid hourly instead. When I brought that to my boss’ attention, he played it off and said that there was confusion between us regarding pay which made me feel like I was being taken advantage of.

Second, the commute to work is pretty horrible due to rush hour to and back from work. It takes me an hour to get to work and the another hour to get home.

Taking all of that into consideration, last week I received an email from my University about a firm literally 5 minutes away from my house looking to hire a staff accountant. This is where I need advice on what to do. Is it rude of me to interview with the new firm and If I get the position leave my current firm just as busy season is about to start? Or can I interview with them just to see what they’ll offer me and then bring that offer to my current boss’ attention so he can increase my pay?

Any advice is appreciated. Thank You.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with interviewing for another position for the betterment of YOUR living situation. I wouldn't haggle over money since you are new but if you are better suited for the position closer to home and it pays more money then go for it.

I went through a similar situation a couple years ago. I was hired by a firm that was about an hour commute for me and worked for them for six months before a firm closer to home had a job opening. I was hesitant to apply for the job because like you, I did not want to disappoint anyone. However, I applied, got the job and couldn't be happier. When I told the managing partner at the old firm about the new position and my reasoning for leaving, he completely understood. I suspect the majority of people would understand your reasoning and if they don't then is that really the type of person you want to work for anyway?
