i currently work for a big 4 firm and was due for promotion effective 7/1. I had 1 exam outstanding (REG) and took that this Q1 and just found out I failed with a 72. With the new score release schedule if i take the exam during Q2 i wouldn’t find out my score until mid August which is after the effective date.

This will mean I would have to stay an extra year as a senior which is not only highly embarrassing but may look bad career wise. I am thinking of looking for other positions in private companies, but i am so confused and sad right now and not sure if that is the best decision.

    Any advice will be helpful!

Finish your last exam before even thinking about this, you're so close to done. Get your license then see what the job market holds for you.

I'm not familiar with Big 4 rules for promotions and such. Do you know if an exception can be made in your case given the long score release if you were to retake in Q2?

If it's hopeless, then what I would do is keep at the CPA and get your license. I think you ought to be excited honestly. It sounds like you'll have a lot going for you especially after you pass the exam. I think you will have many options and that should be very exciting.

@cpatrials You're SOOO close to being done. I am in a big 4 as well and I recently found out I failed AUD with a 74. 74?! And now I have to retake that exam. By the time my results come back, my CPA bonus will decrease. What matters is that you get done with this exam. I know people who left the Big 4 because they didn't even start on the CPA in the first place. I am not saying it's not a big deal to have your promotion delayed but what matters in the long run is that you'll have a license under your belt and job that a lot of people can only wish for. Forget what people will say – the fact that you're in this job and that you're just one exam from getting your license says a lot about how smart you are. And if the people in your practice know you well, they will still send work your way that requires responsibilities = manager level (which is what I am assuming your promotion will land you next). You got this!

    AUD - 79
    BEC - 80
    FAR - 83
    REG - 78
    Ethics - 97
