NEW CPA…EXPERIENCE QUESTION

    Hi,

I’m 38 and I just passed the CPA exam in MA (non-reporting license). I am trying to get work experience to start in this career. I would ultimately like to do accounting work, tax work, and audit work. I have worked in payroll the last 6 years and before that I did accounts receivable and accounts payable. I didn’t do well in college (2.5 GPA).

If I want to get public accounting experience, where should I focus my job search? Generally, what types of places should I look to apply?

    Thank you,

    Brett

    everywhere!

not being a smart alack, but apply at every CPA firm in your area. You may even want to print out old-school resumes and hand deliver them. Ask to speak with the HR or hiring manager or managing partner. Say you have passed the CPA exam, have accounting experience that is mostly payroll related and are looking to expand your experience base to qualify for licensing. Offer to work at a reduced rate for 30 days just to get some experience.

network network network. Join any local accounting/finance groups.

congrats on passing and good luck!
