    Hello Everyone,

I currently work for a private company (in NY) as a senior accountant with no CPA supervisor. I am considering the Nasba verification service where they will assign you an active CPA who will assess and approve your work experience for certification in one of 11 different jurisdictions. I am considering choosing Virginia or Washington DC. Would I still be able to carry myself out to be a CPA on my resume, linkedin etc despite not being licensed in NY? (I plan to stay in private industry). Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you!

I was considering this process. My boss asked our auditor partners and both of them are willing to sign the experience verification form when I need.

Not sure if you need to transfer your credits to the other states and get experience verified in those states for getting your license. Check your state board first to find out if the CPA signing your experience can be any active CPA. If so, you may ask your company's independent auditor.

Of course you can hold yourself out as a CPA as long as you have a valid license somewhere.

One point though if you are applying to jobs or sending resumes, list somewhere on there what state you are licensed in. Even some private emplolyers will go to the website for your state's department of professional licensure to look and see if you are licensed. Don't want anybody to think you're not a CPA just because they looked in the wrong place.

Glad to see this thread actually have contacting them regarding the service on my “to do” list this week. FWIW- DC experience has to be signed off by a CPA but they have what is essentially a non-reporting license if you don't have the experience. VA can be signed off on by any employer- made the mistake of applying under DC (teaches me to research better)- am also considering transferring my scores to VA but again not real sure how to do that so if anyone has a clue that would be great… (DC BOA website is beyond horrid and good luck getting anyone on phone).

And they ask me why I drink

They actually JUST changed the requirement for VA this past month. 🙁 You have to have your experience with a CPA. https://www.boa.virginia.gov/Forms/Experience%20Verfication%20form.pdf

“Prior to applying for a license, a person must have been employed in academia, a firm, government or industry in any capacity involving the substantial use of accounting, financial, tax or other skills that are relevant, as determined by the Board, to providing services to the public using the CPA title or to an employer using the CPA title for a period that is the full-time equivalent of one year”
