How do you guys deal with a close family member passing or will soon pass in the midst of these exams? Just got a called from the doctors say that my grandma wont have too much time left (few short weeks/months).. I’m set to take my exam next month (last part) and part of me wanna stop and spend more time with her. Family is my biggest priority but at the same time I wanna finish this so she can be proud, tho she prob have zero clue what CPA even means nor she cares. She hardly recognized me now. All this news is very devastating for me to consume and process now.
This was the last thing I wanted to happen and I always heard about family issues during the CPA process and wasn’t hoping to take this long to finish..

I haven't had this experience while studying. I don't know what to say. I'm really sorry to hear about your grandma. How much time do you have until an exam expires? Maybe you can take the time to be with her. Again, so sorry and sending a warm hug your way.

@Ana, thanks my first part is expiring at the end of this year. Basically, if I pass I'm done if not then 2 parts to take again.. I just don't know if theres that much time left for my grandma. Work doesn't stop either.. I'm just at a loss now. But I appreciate all your kindness.

My advice is to schedule a week/weekend to spend quality time with your grandmother where you aren't studying or worrying about the CPA exam. If that means you bump your test back a week, so be it. I wouldn't move the test to next year and lose a section since you're so close right now. You also never know what could happen next year! Sorry to hear about your grandma though.

How about studying while with her? A lot of people at this time sleep a lot and you can just be in the room/house/hospital when there are wakeful moments.

My grandfather passed away 3 days before I was scheduled to take FAR. I rescheduled it for the next week so I could make his funeral. Needless to say, it made it difficult to keep studying. The one positive I took from that experience was that it put everything in perspective. I wasn't nervous at all for the exam when I took it because I knew there were more important things in life than stressing over an exam.

First, I'm so sorry you are going through this.

My mom died while I was going through my exams. I found out she had a month to live 2 weeks before an exam. Studying wasn't even on my mind and I rarely opened a book. I ended up just winging it because I couldn't reschedule (should have just not gone) and failed horribly.

If your head isn't in it, I would just take a break for a couple weeks and spend time with your family. It's crazy how much a family can bond during the worst times. You say you want to make your grandma proud with finishing the CPA exam – she will be proud of you no matter what (she's your grandma! You're great just because you are you!) and once you pass it she will be proud, no matter where she is. You can always retake these tests, but you only have so much time with family.

I think I've seen people mention getting their credits extended due to a hardship – that may be something to look into.

Best wishes in this. In times like this, supporting family members is also key. Having meaningful discussions with family about expectations and supporting each other during this time may also help.

I am not sure – but is this a situation where you might get an extension on your 18 month window? It may be worth asking your state.

You're so close to done, not sure your g'ma's condition but if she's bedridden and sleeping most of the time, pull up a chair, be right by her side and study. You may even get MORE studying done. Can accomplish both without sacrifice.

You're so close. I remember my grandma on my mom's side was diagnosed of cancer when I was 15, but ended up living for another 20+years right after that. Also, my dad died in 2012 while visiting Philippines. He was 75 yrs old then. My mom, my sister, my nephew and myself had to go home to the Philippines for his funeral. We're all Filipino-Canadians, living in Canada for awhile now.

My mom is going home for a vacation this end of the month. Of course, I am worried for her. She's 69yrs old and having common problems with older people. She lives with us, which is nice. I still have family in the Philippines, especially my two brothers, and their families. Likely she'll be staying with one of them. Yes, I am praying hard that I will see her again in April 2018, not a repeat of my dad in 2012.

Last week, my husband for 27yrs, got a ‘second life', he found out that there's a clog on his artery, and has been sitting there for awhile now. He had a heart attack while working with his Amateur Radio based station, used for a long-distance coverage for his high-frequency (HF), so he'll be able to talk around world, nice & clear.

Digging rocks, mixing cement, carrying heavy cement bags with hardly any breaks just did it. He managed to walk a few metres, and asked for help (barely), asked me to call 911. So I took a break from studying for few days.

Even after he's back home, he's still an outpatient. Once in awhile, I have to drive him to his heart rehab program, I have to bring my laptop, and find a library, or a table and start studying. He won't be able to drive for at least a month, and not back for work until Dec 1, as per doctor's advice.

So, going back to your nightmare you're having. Try to improvise, especially if you stick with your exam schedule.
Take care. I'll say a prayer for you & your family.

I am truly amazed and appreciative of how much support you guys are offering!! I find so much comfort talking to you guys on here and hearing your advice. I will take some of you guys' advice (study while my grandma is asleep). She will be spending the rest of her time at home and the only thing she does is sleep so I guess that will play out to my advantage. On the bright side it is good to see she wont be suffering any much longer. Thank you all!

    sorry man.

My Dad was in hospice during my first ever accounting class and it was hard to learn the material but I feel studying helped with my grieving process because it kept my mind going. I had my principles of accounting final a few days after he passed and didnt care about it what so ever. So I would try to get it done before she goes 🙁 maybe even reschedule for an early date. good luck to you.
