REG – How to Simplify all of the Minutia

I cannot believe how much crap is compacted into the REG exam. I’m pretty sure the first 3 chapters of Tax that I just covered definitely covered more than FAR’s first 3 chapters. And, the first 3 chapters were only Individual and Property Tax. Now, I am moving onto Corporate and Entity tax. However, I just did a very thorough review to make sure I don’t forget everything I just learned.

Does anyone have any advice concerning REG and how to dumb down the material? I always feel like I need to know the book inside out and not just work MCQ’s. Numonics help me keep track of things and Notes help. I’m trying to dig really deep into Tax bc I hear most Sims are focused on Tax and should have higher order thinking – not just memorizing how to solve MCQ’s

    Are my thoughts correct? Thanks!

I just too REG last Thursday. I think that for REG once you have gone through all of tax, some things will become clearer as there are general rules that are applicable across the board. I took a lot of notes and made my own flashcards, to kind of go back and drill the concepts…. I think at first it's more overwhelming, but it makes more sense toward the end…:)

Thanks for your feedback. I agree that I am noticing similar rules as I move through the material. And, All of the information is making more sense as I go back and review all of the previous chapters. I just can't believe how much loaded information there is though.

    Thanks and Goodluck!

Pattern recognition. When I studied for REG, I did all the MCQs by section. By doing it this way, you recognize what the question is asking and how to pick up on the information you need to plug it into the equation. In other words, repetition helped a great bit.

There are a lot small details to study for that you can go over once or twice and be done with it in my opinion. Many of these questions require simple memorization. Read it, take notes on the more difficult areas, and revisit it again when time comes for your final review.

Despite all the minutia and having to work your way through all the MCQ, I also recommend to research the SIMs and ensure you are prepared on how to maximize points on this part of the exam. SIMs are 50% of your score.

    Good luck!

Do some MCQs. I took REG on 9/10 and I feel that the questions I got in the exam were similar to the MCQs I did. you'll notice the types of questions that are asked more and I'm glad that I made sure to study one individual topic that kept popping up on ninja MCQs the night before the exam.

    AUD - 64, 80 Passed on 10/09/17

    BEC - 75 Passed on 12/09/17

    FAR - 69, 71, 73, 83 Passed on 06/10/18

    REG - 81 Passed on 09/10/17

I'm still waiting on my score, but I felt pretty good when I sat for REG on 9/8.

I did a lot of MCQs and a LOT of Sims. During my final review the last few days before the test I was trying to review the readings on everything, but in the end decided it was more efficient to focus on doing a ton of problems. It was helpful in that the information was overwhelming when I read it, but the questions helped me focus on the topics that I was likely to see the most of, and they helped me to retain the information, I think.

I'd say do whatever initial learning works well (lectures, readings, etc.) but then make it all hit home with MCQs and Sims.

I found the Sims to be way harder than the MCQs on my exam.

    AUD - NINJA in Training
    BEC - NINJA in Training
    FAR - 84
    REG - 90
