I have emailed NASBA twice already requesting approval for paper and pencil and I have not heard back.

Has anyone experienced this as well?

If you have gmail check your junk folder. My approval accidentally went to my junk folder and I didnt see it till after I took FAR but used it for REG on 2/28.

You usually get a response from a person and then letter is sent in a separate email.

I so wish I would have done this from the beginning. Every pen I’ve gotten from prometric has had a smashed tip or ran out part way through my tests. For BEC, I checked my pens before going in and asked for new ones, but they said no… “you CPA folks ruin them all” was the response I got. Apparently, we all like to take it out on the pens.

    BEC - 82 (9/7/2019)

    AUD - 81 (11/23/2019)

@otis – That is insane. I always get new ones, i just much rather have paper and pencil. My approval expired so I wanted another one.

@lcarito – Yeah, when i got my first approval, I received it the next day. I sent an email February 1st and received no response. I just followed up again.

Was everyones letter sent as a word document or a pdf?
When I was sent my letter they sent it to me in a word document, where I can basically make edits if I wanted. Do they keep track of who has these letters and the date ranges? I never really see prometric do much with it. They barley take a quick look at it (since they already know what it is), hand it back, and then switch the boards to paper.
Mine has not expired yet, but was thinking of just editing the date – if need be. But would also be concerned of getting in trouble.

Failing is not the end; keep trying. I will keep trying.

@Karla I received mine in a word document as well, and was surprised by that for the same reasons. I definitely wouldn't edit the dates once expired though, lol! Just your luck, somehow it's being tracked when Prometric reports it back to NASBA. I actually went ahead and put a reminder in my phone to renew the request a month before it expires… yeah, I'm that person, lol!

    @Lmillan08
I received my letter about 2-3 days after my request.

I didn't know about this scratch paper and pencil thing until this thread. So I emailed nasba two days before my 3/8 test and didn't get any response from them(i know it was too late).
I am thinking once i receive it maybe I can use it for my next exam. Does the letter contain expiration date? If so, when is the best time to request one? Pencil and paperare much better than laminated paper…

@icandoit The expiration date was 1 year from the date of the letter. I believe the website says you have to request it at least 2 weeks in advance. I will admit I requested it probably about 12 days in advance. Luckily, they approved it in time for my first exam.

I'd like to also add that some people have said the Prometric site didn't allow them to use pencil and paper when they showed up on test day with the letter. Apparently their testing site wanted the letter provided to them in advance (not sure how far in advance). On the flip side, others mentioned that they were able to simply show the letter on test day and were provided with pencil and paper. I called my Prometric location a call about a week in advance to confirm their requirement for receiving the letter. Luckily my location was one of the Prometric sites that allow you to simply show up on test day with the letter.

Thank you so much. Its good to hear that the letter is good for one year! I actually asked one of TSA at the testing center if I need to bring a printed copy. She said its best if I bring the paper version. So I guess they allow pencil and papers I took BEC a couple days ago and it required lots of calculation. Wish I had pencicle and paper. If I fail its all bcs of laminated paper! J/K
