According to NJCPA, this is the following for Jersey candidates: Candidates for certification must produce Statements of Experience for ALL employment following acquisition of a baccalaureate degree. Failure to comply with this requirement will delay consideration of your application.

Why do they care about jobs that have nothing to do with accounting. The worst part is the rule is not written clearly on the State Board website.

The experience must be gained under the supervision of a U.S. certified public accountant who is properly licensed and registered or authorized to practice in the jurisdiction of their principal place of business. If a CPA supervisor was not properly licensed or registered or authorized to practice in the state where they practiced, the experience cannot be accepted.

So if you work underneath a Maine CPA in New York, the experience won't be accepted. Cute. Your example is even worse though.

I suffer from Circadian Malfunction's stupid rule. My supervisor, who is a South Carolina CPA cannot sign off on my work experience in North Carolina. So I am having to rely on the other option of having 4 years accounting experience, but it doesn't appear that there is a form for this one unless they want me to use the default form, NOT have my supervisor include her “not good enough” CPA license number, and risk having my application being considered incomplete.

So I looked up the NJ experience form, and it seems to only allow employers to fill in percentages of time under accounting-related headings, and not have an “other non-accounting work” option. But, also requires that all percentages add up to 100%. So, if you worked a non-related job after finishing your degree, I'm not sure how an employer could honestly complete it. Hopefully NJ CPA has the requirements slightly misstated on their site (given that they're not actually the state board, perhaps their summarization of the board's requirements isn't quite right…). Either way, that is definitely a struggle to comply with. The only time I've had to list every job I held for any length of time was applying for state jobs and that's been a struggle, having had some temp part-time jobs that only lasted a couple weeks. Can't imagine having to get an experience form completed for each job. 😐

I heard that certain employment agencies are pretty bad. My sister went to one and they wanted all her addresses from the last 10 years. I made a list of all the places I lived since 2009, 14 addresses (almost all roommate deals or short-term sublets where my name was not on the lease).

“Lived” is such a variable term. haha. Like, I went away to school; what address would I use for that? The campus PO box? Or “123 College Road, Dorm Building, Room 123”? Hope Mom still has it all written down somewhere… Then I stayed for like 3 months with someone locally there to work over the summer, but never used that address for anything official, still had all my mail going to the campus box. So, is that another address? How many nights in a row do you have to sleep somewhere for it to be another address? 😛 I'd generally think if you weren't there long enough to be legally required to update your driver's license, you weren't there long enough for anyone else to have a right to ask!

I'm in DC so I won't even go into “stupid laws”- but the dumbest rule I have come across is that you must submit 2 passport size photographs of yourself with EVERY SINGLE APPLICATION you file- so at this point the DC board has 8 photos of me which will soon be 10 once I find out I failed AUD. I keep thinking the rate I am going the board will be able to wallpaper their offices with nothing but photos of me….

I want to add on to the stupidity of these rules. In addition to not allowing a non-NC CPA to sign off on experience as a supervisor, I am ALSO not allowed to use someone as a moral character reference who is a non-NC CPA who is currently living and working in NC. HOW DOES THIS EVEN MATTER?!?!??!?! Sooo frustrated right now.

Basically my CFO who I have worked with for the past FIVE years can contribute nothing to my license that I potentially cannot even get because of all these ridiculous rules.
