    Hey all,

I’m trying to figure out how to move forward with the CPA exam.

I submitted my first-time applicant application on January 18th and Im currently waiting for a NTS. According to the NASBA site, processing takes 4-6 weeks.

My original plan was to take BEC this window. Is that still doable? I have not ordered Becker yet (provided by my firm), because I am wary of starting the 18 month clock too soon. Also, I would hate to study for a full 3 or 4 weeks, only to miss the window.

Would I maybe be better off just studying for FAR? I planned to study 8 weeks for FAR anyway, which would bring me to the beginning of the next window…

What do you guys think? Any thoughts are appreciated!

Do they already have your school transcripts? I applied on September 17th and didn't get my NTS until November 28 but the first few weeks was “processing” my transcripts.

    AUD - 72
    BEC - 75
    FAR - 82
    REG - 80
It will all be worth it...hopefully

Yep, my transcripts were sent out the same day. I had no idea that the process just to get a NTS was so drawn out 🙁

I would take BEC now before the CPA test change format takes effect in April. BEC is less material and FAR is the least affected section of all 4 as far as new exam interface is concerned.

    Good luck!

I would stick with BEC. As I'm sure you've been told, BEC is changing to include SIMS…I already passed BEC, and while studying I remember being very grateful that I didn't have to consider the material with respect to how they would be asked in simulations. I also used Becker, which has only 6 chapters on the BEC exam. In comparison FAR has 10, and you have to again consider SIMS. It take a bit longer to prepare for.

I double checked my email, it looks like it took me about 3 weeks from my first application until I received my first NTS. You should be fine in terms of scheduling before the window closes (it actually goes until March 10th this quarter.) All that considered, because you dont have a tonnnn of time to study for FAR, and because BEC is changing the most anyway with the new exam, I'd definitely suggest taking BEC. Good luck!

    AUD - 93
    BEC - 85
    FAR - 90
    REG - 91

I'm just worried that if I start studying now and I miss the cut off, I'll have to spend the last 3 weeks in March keeping BEC fresh in my head, leaving me with 8 full weeks of BEC (I've heard that 4 is typically enough).

    Maybe I'm overthinking this?

I'm in the same boat. I wasn't aware it took so long. I work in the same office building as my State Accountancy Board so I dropped off my application there. I was told they had 30 days to review it, another 30 days for the committee to approve it, and then ANOTHER 30 days for the board to approve it. And FINALLY I would get to the point of being able to schedule my exams. So I changed my game plan and am studying for FAR now, and most likely will miss the deadline to take any exams this quarter. It sucks but it is what it is. I regret not applying for it sooner but didn't know. It may vary by state so I am not sure if it would be the same for you.
