CPA33 – I'm the opposite. Been in accounting NOW want to join the Navy. I'm thinking reserves, it has always been my dream to serve my country. I'm 25 years old and one more test left before I become a CPA.

23, just finished graduate school, been at big 4 for almost a month.

    Bec-76 (7/14)
    Aud-81 (8/14)
    Reg-82 (7/15)
    Far- 82 (10/15)

Moral of the story, don't do your CPA while working in Big 4 Public Accounting.

@cole In the military you'll learn what leadership truly means. It seems so far to me that most people in supervisory roles within the civilian community are more “managers” than “leaders”. If you do join the navy I highly recommend applying to OCS for a commission.

@CPA33 I did some research and after talking to a recruiter for the AF (First I was going to do AF Reserves but honestly deep down I want Navy) they told me to be commissioned I would need a 3.5 GPA from college and I only have a 3.0. Of course I could take extra classes to get my GPA up but honestly that would take a LONG time to do since I have already taken tons of classes. Believe me I would rather go the officer route but I don't seem to meet the requirements other than that I have a college degree.

@cole – no shame in going enlisted. There are plenty of enlisted folks with bachelors and even masters degrees. I'd recommend going guard or reserve so you can serve without sacrificing your career as a CPA. Plenty of people do 20 years guard/reserve for the benefits and you can still secure a military retirement. To sacrifice a career as a CPA to be a full time, active duty enlistedman would be a pretty big reduction in earning potential. If you just want to answer the call to serve you can still do so without sacrificing your career as a CPA by going guard/reserve.

Thank you CPA33 that's great advice. I definitely think reserves is the best option for me due to the reasons you just brought up. It's honestly all I think about and I just know I'd regret it forever if I didn't try to serve.

I'm 31. I thought I was old and would struggle. I graduated with 150 hours when I was 21 and have worked in industry (6 months at a CPA firm right out of college – NO THANK YOU, SIR) ever since. I have no interest in doing any kind of public accounting but I have a great job and make great money but had hit my ceiling more than likely so I *finally* decided to do it. I took a tax class last summer and my professor was 69 and had just passed the exam the year before (passed all 4 on the first try. I was super inspired and no longer felt sorry for myself for being “old.”

    FAR - 87 2/18/14
    AUD - 84 4/2/14
    REG - 87 7/23/14
    BEC - 78 8/26/14

I'm finally an *official* CPA - TX
