Discouraged – Your employer sounds like a scumbag. They are asking you to quit to lower costs rather than laying you off properly. Keep working and be the best employee you can be so they cannot say anything to unemployment or in a future reference. CPA firms pull this trick time and time again.
If you want to work in public, you should stay in public and look for another job. Maybe go for staff, your experience and salary will catch up. Don't let one bad job spoil your career goals.CA Certified Public AccountantPassed all 4 parts of the CPA exam.
hhjoggerParticipantI'm using sequoia. Mostly because it's cheap. Classes are a lot of work with sequoia. Becker has one too. I am thinking about trying out some of their webcasts. I believe they have unlimited option.

I'm am a technical natural at accounting, but could never do sales. On the other hand, if you are at firm people skills are key. You have to play politics and work with clients. Some people at the firm I worked at were not that smart when it came to accounting, but used their people skills to get to the top. In short, technical skills are not everything in accounting.

My first private job was non exempt and they gave me so much overtime. My boss encouraged me to work it too. They also promoted me after a year.CA Certified Public AccountantPassed all 4 parts of the CPA exam.

Remember if you intend to get your CPA, and go industry, you will still need a CPA to sign off on your experience. You may or may not have a supervisor that is a CPA in industry. Be careful what reputation you leave in your wake and what bridges you burn if you potentially need a past employer to sign off for you.I am a CA CPA. In CA, even if you burn your bridges they can be subject to disciplinary action if they do not have a good reason to sign off on your hours. You can have your hours you worked signed off for immediately, in fact, I would recommend you do! If you had attest, submit those hours to the board, too.
FYI If I could, I would have stayed in public longer, I just ended up in industry quickly. But maybe the grass is always greener… However when you work less hours, it is easy to study for the CPA. Plus some staff accountant positions are non-exempt. 🙂

Pretty much literally. Just looking for a place where I can just do my job, lay low, and go home (even that means I have to be there till 10 pm). Luckily I am at a private company where I can do that now.
