Ask the NINJAs – How to Take CPA Exam Notes

Ask the NINJAs

Dear NINJAs,

I'm starting to study for AUD and wanted to know the best way to tackle this. I have my CPA review materials and will start with the videos.

That being said, should I simultaneously take notes while I watch the videos? I have a feeling I won't remember a lot of what they say.

Should I take notes on a notepad and totally disregard the recommended highlighting?

This is my second attempt at AUD so I really want to make the right moves to pass. – Giselle

Giselle,

This is a great (and common) question.

You should take notes while you watch your video lectures. Go to the office supply store and grab a stack of legal pads and some nice pens. Drop a few extra bucks on pens you actually like to write with because you will be spending a lot of time with them over the next several weeks.

Hit “Play” and go to town on those legal pads. If the instructor points out something – write it down.

Skip the highlighting. Highlighting is stupid.

It's painting pretty colors on grey paper. Are you really going to go back through your book and look at the highlighted pages several times?

No, you won't.

Are you going to go back through and read your notes several times?

Yes, you will.

Ditch the highlighters … give them to some bored 3 year-old.

HiYa!
